Tattoos After 40 ?
OK straight up this is NOT me – not even close. This gorgeous lady is Kristen Leanne (and NO I don’t know her personally or how to get in touch with her…) & besides getting your attention 🙂 I use her photo as an example of how great ink looks on a beautiful, young body. But like I said – it’s not MY body. My body is a little more…
and maybe a little…
In 10 days I fly to Seattle to start a 3/4 sleeve on my left arm.
I’m pretty excited and the artist who is tattooing me is AWESOME so I know the work is going to be beautiful (check out www.bafaro.com)
But here is the thing – my tattoo artist asked me to give her very exact measurements for my arm so she could fine tune the drawing. I mean exact. So I had to measure the middle of my arm – we will call it the triceps area or in my case…
And I wondered if I should, you know, cheat on the measurement a bit – streamline it if you will, cause like I mentioned – I am getting a little old – 44 to be exact – and I am more zaftig than I use to be. But am I getting too old to get tattooed? Are tattoos after 40 a bad idea? Now I don’t believe you are ever too old FOR tattoos. You get em when your young (and maybe a little dumb…)
and then you live with them and in them because they become a part of you…a part of your story. By the time you have hit your mid-40’s you probably have accumulated most of the ink you plan on getting – or at least all of your prime real estate is used up. But I’m a late tattoo bloomer and have boatloads of “beach front/ocean view” real estate to ink. Arms, back, legs – acreage with lots of potential… and skin tags.
( I know this isn’t a skin tag but when I googled images for skin tags the results were SO repulsive I couldn’t do that to you so I went with this instead – your welcome.)
Actually I only have 1 skin tag (those little bumps of skin that just kind of hang out in space and do nothing) but it is where part of my new sleeve will go so it has to go. I asked my daughter – who is 13 – to tie a piece of thread around it (this cuts off blood flow and they just fall off on their own in a few days – like bull testicles – hey this is a science blog now!)
She did not want to help me…
I’m not even sure if she’s still speaking to me. So I asked my husband.
Me: hey honey can you tie some thread around that skin tag I have – like I did for you.
Husband: I think you should put a safety-pin through it like that wrestler did – the guy who hung out with Cyndi Lauper.
Captain Lou Albano & Cyndi Lauper
Husband: Or you can work it into the tattoo – like a dangley eyeball or something.
ME: (long drawn out sighhhhhhh)
So I asked my best friend Jenny. Jenny is always game for weird favors and nothing grosses her out – NOTHING. This was her suggestion; “snip it off with some nail clippers”
Um, no thanks.
(note to self – NEVER ask Jenny for another favor…)
So it’s still there and the clock is ticking. And the bat wings are still there too – but this is who I am now and there is no changing it – not this week anyways. So I’m gonna celebrate me instead, I think. In fact I’m going to get my sleeves and some other ink and I am going to ROCK my middle years and my senior years and when I’m really old maybe I’ll stop getting tattoos.
or maybe not.
Maybe I’ll wait even longer to stop getting ink…
But either way I will go out with all the ink I want and in style because I’m starting to think tattoos after 40 ROCK!!
