Gothic Mansions, Classic Horror Movies, The Dark of Night – these are a few of my favorite things. Add thrilling guitar work, insane drums and intense vocals all wrapped up in a perfectly cool and creepy package and you have the band New Years Day.
Founded by lead singer Ashley Costello in 2005 New Years Day have been building a ground swell of fans and critical acclaim over the last several years. They were definitely a crowd pleaser at Vans Warped Tour in Mountainview with an early stage time that did nothing to stop a crowd of thousands forming to catch them live.
Ashley has been tapped to co-host Alternative Press Music Awards red carpet, they were one of the bands selected to play at the Vans Warped Tour kick-off party and the band recently won a Kerrang award for Best Video for “Angel Eyes”
Meanwhile their latest EP Epidemic is a strong example of why they are a band to fall in love with. They brought all their theatrics and stage presence to the main Unicorn stage and had the crowd in a frenzy with the first song. Ashley knows how to work the crowd and the band never misses a moment with non-stop guitars, massive drums and a confident stage presence. This is not New Years Day’s first rodeo and it shows in their tight sound and thrilling showmanship. So many bands are dressing it down these days and it was awesome to see New Years Day bring all the glamour and mystery to the stage and give us a perfect example of a kick ass band in top form. The line at their booth was packed with ardent fans waiting patiently for a chance to meet band members and a group of lucky fans even got to sit down with Ashley one on one for a TEI Workshop that she is holding throughout the tour. You can also catch Nikki Misery’s TEI Workshop on guitar technique. Chances are if your going to Warped Tour this year New Years Day is already one of the bands you plan on seeing – make sure you do – they are incredible!
My moment in the sun – no make that dark shadowy corner – came when I sat down with Nikki Misery and Nick Rossi to chat about the tour. This is Nick Rossi’s first time at Warped and Nikki Misery is in for his second stretch. They are excited to be a part of Vans Warped Tour this year, can’t remember what a day off is, and want to give their fans a set to remember. Still in full makeup hours after their set Nikki and Nick were completely approachable and relaxed and made my nervous intern (who is a huge fan) just about pass out from excitement.
They also agreed to answer my silly Proust Questionnaire and here is what they had to say;
Tattoo Tourist: What is your stupid human trick?
Nick: I’ll answer for him. He is an encyclopedia of Rock Knowledge – he knows the most obscure facts like who was the guitarist for The Cramps in 1981 – all the really cool stuff (Kid Congo Powers – thanks Wikipedia)
Nick: My power is I am a human megaphone. I am at either a zero or a ten – there is no in between.
TT: What piece of advice would you give to your 15 yr old self?
Nikki: Practice more
Nick: Practice more and try to stay in your own world (the creative inner space) and don’t get distracted by other stuff.
TT: What is the best gift you ever received?
Nikki: A Fernandez bass when I was 16
Nick: I got a Paiste cymbal for Christmas from my Grandma (way to go Grandma!) and I was so excited when I opened it I just went right to my room and put it on my kit and started playing it. I loved that thing and played it so much I eventually broke it after a couple of years. TT: Who would you like to have for an imaginary friend?
Nikki: Lux Interior
Nick: Willie Wonka (Gene Wilder style – sorry Johnny)
TT: Who would you want to have a Freaky Friday switch up with?
Nikki and Nick: Each other (hmmm The Relapse Symphony said the same thing and New Years Day is a fan of theirs and vice versa – coincidence?)
TT: What is your next tattoo going to be?
Nikki: I’ve got some stuff to finish up and then… then I want to get a sleeve of villians on my leg (Nikki has an impressive and varied collection – I especially like his Nosferatu tattoo)
Nick: I want to get a Pirates of the Caribbean sleeve (to go around his first tattoo of the POTC gold coin on his forearm) but I want to just have a good artist come up with their own interpretation of it. TT: If you could have any superpower what would it be?
Nikki: I would be the The Fly or I would be Ice man – turn stuff to ice at will
Nick: oh man I loved the Fantastic Four so much I would be Mister Fantastic (stretchy man) and I could reach out my arms and play my set like… (insert image of octopus playing drums here).
I could have hung out with these guys all day and just chatted about tattoos, old horror movies and all things gloomy and creepy – they are my cup of spider web covered tea to be sure – but I was happy to just get a few minutes of their time. Thanks again Nikki and Nick – you are the fucking bomb!
