Vans Warped Tour has frequently been the place to see a band before they breakout and become the next big thing. With over 70 bands playing this year there are bound to be a couple of gems that people will be talking about for years to come and bragging about how they caught their set at Warped before they were huge (I’m looking at you My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, Blink 182 etc…). This year I think one of the bands to watch is definitely The Relapse Symphony.
With their new album Born to Burn set to drop in a matter of days the band is hitting the stage at Warped with a ferocity and passion that is impressive to watch. I caught their set at Mountainview at the end of a long sunny day but the band had energy to burn and gave the crowd (that had waited patiently until almost the end of the day to see them) a performance filled with bombast, bravado, intensity and solid sounds.
The bands energy is contagious and the crowd was electrified watching their onstage performance filled with heart, passion and solid rock beats. Watching their set after being in the sun for 11 hours was like chugging a 42oz Monster drink with a double espresso chaser – they fucking rocked it and the crowd knew it. When the band left the stage an older guy standing next to me who had just wandered by and caught the last two songs turned to me and said, “Did you see that? They were fucking incredible! It was insane!” Instant. Fan.
If you are heading out to Warped Tour this year be sure to catch The Relapse Symphony’s set. You’ll be bragging about how you saw them before they got huge for years to come.
I was lucky enough to sit down with Bret and JC and have a quick chat. This is their first Warped tour and so far they are loving it even though the crazy schedule takes a little getting used to. They were excited to be on tour and looking forward to their highly anticipated new album Born to Burn to come out next week. Relaxed and easygoing there was no Rock Star attitude here – just a couple of nice guys that like to shred.
They were so nice they even agreed to answer my Proust Questionnaire of silly questions. Here is what they had to say;
Tattoo Tourist: What is your stupid human trick?
JC: I can identify every car I see and know the year and everything …but only the cool ones.
TT: What piece of advice would you give to your 15 yr old self?
JC: Don’t steal your sisters car…without a license.
Bret: Keep it together and it will be alright.
TT: What is the best gift you ever received?
JC: A guitar when I was 12 from my mom. I used to quit at a lot of stuff – I would start something and then just drop it so I knew my mom wouldn’t get me a guitar. So I learned how to play a friend’s broken guitar and when my mom saw that she got me my own.
Bret: My first drum kit when I was 8 yrs old from my dad.
TT: Who would you like to have for an imaginary friend?
JC: MC Hammer but he would have to enter the room with that sideways dance thing with the pants. (of course)
Bret: Dee Dee Ramone
JC: Oh man I want to change mine now!
TT: OK to what?
JC: Dee Dee Ramone
TT: Who would you want to have a Freaky Friday switch-up with?
JC and Bret: Each other because we get to different things onstage and that would be cool.
TT: What is your next tattoo going to be?
JC: A little touch up (JC has an impressive amount of ink already and is working on a full torso piece) and an old fashioned microphone on one side and a 49 Ford on the other side (collarbone – I asked about the neck and JC said “No Job stoppers”.)
Bret: A Johnny Thunder tattoo (Bret has only 1 tattoo so far – fairly shocking for such a Rock and Roller – but it’s a Misfits tattoo and we all agreed if you are only going to have one tattoo that is the one to have!)
TT: If you could have any superpower what would it be?
JC: I could make any food I want appear in my hands any time I want (very handy on Warped Tour let me tell you)
Bret: I could snap my fingers and have instant hairstyle. (the secret side of Rock and Roll – looking that cool can be a lot of work sometimes!)
Thanks again to Bret and JC and The Relapse Symphony for showing fans what Rock and Roll and Vans Warped Tour is all about!
