Have you ever been to Northern California? I’m not talking fast and funky San Francisco or even farm to food wine country Sonoma and Napa. I’m talking towering redwoods, banana slugs, Bigfoot sightings and Murder She Wrote Northern Cal.. Where can you find this intoxicating mix?
Mendocino (Mendo for locals) is about 3 hours north of San Francisco and is chock full of quite streets, quaint Victorian houses, sweeping vistas and one of the coolest tattoo artists I have ever met – Amber Sanders.
Amber has been tattooing for over fifteen years and it shows in the quality of her tattoos. I had the pleasure of being tattooed by Amber a few years back and her attention to detail, artistry and gentle hand made getting my armpits and ribs tattooed a pleasure (albeit it an acquired one).
Amber’s tattoos feature delicate line work, thoughtful placement, whimsy and subtle shading. Amber herself is a poster child for what you hope your tattoo artist will look like – an awesome Rock Star – China Doll with bright blue hair and outfits that make me wish I could burn all my clothes and start over. But don’t let her Monster High Doll looks fool you – Amber is a serious artist and approaches her tattoos with professionalism and attention to detail that show in the final results.
Amber also has a heart of gold which was prominently on display last week when she donated a mastectomy tattoo as part of P.Ink Day. Our survivor Anne was having some first tattoo jitters and was fretting about not getting a recent email from Amber. I assured her this was par for course for most tattoo artists and warned Amber that maybe our participant for P.Ink Day was having second thoughts. Her immediate response? “If it’s not in the cards for her to be tattooed today that is just fine. She doesn’t have to feel any pressure whatsoever.”
Amber cleared her day to tattoo someone for FREE and was totally at peace with whatever happened. That is grace and generosity combined in my book. Of course I bravely volunteered to get tattooed myself if necessary (ahem) and was admittedly a tiny bit disappointed when our lovely survivor Anne showed up. She received her first ever tattoo and walked out of the shop with her husband singing Amber’s praises and promising to come back for more.
So if you find yourself far north and want to do something special for yourself seek out Amber at Spread Eagle Tattoo (formerly Voodo Ink) in Mendocino. Soak in the rural beauty of the coast and leave with a permanent reminder of this special place and this wonderful tattoo artist.
