The Shadow Side – Andy Black’s Much Anticipated Solo Project
Andy Black AKA Andy Beirsack is the charismatic, well spoken frontman for the metal band Black Veil Brides – known for their bombastic sound, screaming guitars, and insane drums. As the lead singer and creator of BVB, Andy has shaped the band from the ground up and his signature voice and lyrical style help to define it to their millions of fans – so how does his solo project compare?
Breaking away from the heavy classic metal sound of BVB, Andy has delivered a solo project that is rich with variety, pop hooks, synthesized beats, and memorable lyrics. Black has brought in an array of seasoned professionals to help shape this album into a tapestry of styles without loosing his own distinctive voice. The results are excellent.
The first single “We Don’t Have to Dance” is infectious toe-tapping fun. Patrick Stump of Fall Out Boy lends a hand and Black’s voice is rich and full as he pleads to be left alone at all those LA parties. Other stand out tracks include “Ribcage”, which has a resounding hook and dance worthy beat, “Louder Than Your Love “with the Way brothers making a rare appearance (that’s Gerard and Mikey to you MCR fans), and “Paint it Black” a thoughtful and touching song about the back and forth, and ultimate strength of his relationship with long time love and now wife Juliett Simms.
The overall tone of the album is fiercely independent, well thought out, and imminently danceable. A solid pop record from start to finish, where strong writing, tight musical arrangements, and Black’s impressive voice are on full display. Black Veil Bride fans might miss the wailing guitars, poundings drums, and Andy’s signature screams but this album should give any fan of Andy’s a lot to love. Andy has the face of an angel, a voice like a velvet hammer, and looks like he was born to be a rock star. The Shadow Side proves it.
